OKKO London Menu That I Didn't Expect - Hambagu Steak That Is Gluten Free

This is day 9 of highlighting small businesses in London, and today we’re at OKKO in East London. Think handmade gyoza, miso lamb chops grilled over charcoal, and even a Japanese Hambagu steak you rarely find here. An izakaya where comfort food meets robata grilling.

This is day 9 of highlighting small businesses and today we are going to OKKO in Victoria Park, London. It is a Japanese restaurant that goes beyond the basics like sushi or nigiri. They also serve proper home cooked style dishes that feel different from what you usually find. And that is what makes OKKO stand out.

A Couple, 30 Kushiyaki, and One Simple Answer

I mean, how good is it when a couple orders almost 30 kushiyaki? I had to ask, and they told me straight: there aren’t many proper Japanese spots, let alone robata places, in East London. So whenever they make it to OKKO, they go all in. And honestly, I could see why.

With a drink in hand, everything just flowed.

Why OKKO Works in East London

OKKO isn’t trying to be flashy. It feels like a laid back izakaya with charcoal grilling and comfort food. You can sit down for lamb chops off the grill or even black miso cod. So the chefs are from many parts of Latin America who has worked at famous Japanese restaurants like Sushi Samba, so you will also see some fusion dishes like rice taco.

The Vibe at OKKO

Menu at Okko (03/09/2025)

Apparently it used to be a cafe which they took over. So it has a very relaxing vibe with a lot of wooden panel. It really fits the vibe of a local Japanese restuarant.

The Dishes You Need to Order

I just want to say that OKKO really prioritise quality of food where they prep almost everything in house from gyozas to skewers. Although they didn't get the luxury to have an open kitchen due to small space, but I went early to see how much prep they go through.

Robata

Obviously you need to order robata. My favourites were Negima (chicken thigh) and Gindara (black cod). I think Tsukune was great, but I still think the best you can have it is at Junsei.
