How a Small Onigiri Food Stall Opened Cafe / Bar in One Year - KAIHO̅ Japanese Café/Bar

Day 11 of highlighting small businesses. KAIHO̅ started as a food stall near Spitalfields and is now a Japanese café/bar by the canal. Neat like Japan, with high ceilings, rare LPs, rice burgers, and onigiri from classic salmon to truffle salmon.
How a Small Onigiri Food Stall Opened Cafe / Bar in One Year - KAIHO̅ Japanese Café/Bar

I remember when I first visited Zen Musubi. It was a small food stall next to Spitalfields market. I mean it was not inside the market, instead it was across the street near Brick Lane. But even with not being on the prime location, they were able to get some hype.

Within a year, popular demand brought them into a bigger space where they now serve everything from classic salmon onigiri to Japanese-French truffle salmon onigiri. Now the space is a cafe / bar.

It’s a growth story that shows how quality and care can quickly build a loyal following.

A Japanese Café That Mirrors Japan’s Precision

When I first visited Japan, I noticed how perfectly aligned everything was.

From packaging to plating. That same attention to detail is alive at KAIHO̅, where even a simple fruit sando comes out neatly layered in their small kitchen.

And it tasted sweet but not heavy, creamy but not rich, fruity but not tart—just balanced.

I don't normally like fruit sando cause it has too much cream, but I think my taste buds have changed a bit. Cause I actually kind of liked the M&S fruit sando, and I loved Kaiho's Sando. Especially how they made it with cutting the crust (Which I think it's the most important part about sando).

The Vibe: Neat, Open, and Inviting

Step inside and you’ll see why this place feels like a little slice of Japan. The interior is minimalist and neat, with high ceilings that make the space feel open and airy.

A dedicated corner with a turntable and shelves of rare Japanese LPs creates a cozy nook for music lovers, while great speakers fill the café with warm sound. If you prefer the outdoors, there’s a canal-side seating area that makes it perfect for catching the last of autumn light.

More Than Just Sandos

What makes KAIHO̅ stand out is its range. Here you’ll find rice burgers, donburi bowls, and their specialty, onigiri. These aren’t just quick snacks, but carefully crafted bites that bridge tradition with playful twists.
